About JTC Online Mentoring

The JTC Online Mentoring Program will connect Colorado State University Technical Journalism students to mentors using the Internet.

As the Internet gains popularity, the opportunities for distance learning become possible. More and more, people who are separated by miles need not endure communications breakdown. We have found ways to communicate instantaniously using the Internet. The opportunities for using these communications technologies for education are available for all students from Kindergarten to College.

Studies by Dr. Jamie Switzer at the Colorado State University Department of Journalism and Technical Communication indicate that online mentoring programs are common in K-12 education, but have not been commonly used in post-secondary higher education. We aim to change this by introducing the JTC Online Mentoring Program.

Mentors have traditionally been around to help students learn by being physically present. While miles may separate our students from alumni, using the Internet and technologies available to us, such as Webcams, Internet conferencing, E-mail and instant messaging, graduates can shorten this gap and provide students with the resources they need to become successful journalism graduates.
